The former Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis has decided not to take a vocal stand on the elections process of New Democracy, in an effort to act as a guarantor of party unity. The former party leader has urged calm and unity amongst party members, ahead of the critical election scheduled for the 22nd of November.

Nevertheless, Mr. Karamanlis considers the provisional party leader and candidate Evangelos Meimarakis as the best option for New Democracy’s future. This is evident by a number of staunch Karamanlis supporters – such as Evripidis Stylianidis and Giorgos Vlachos – who have assumed an active role in Mr. Meimarakis’ campaign.

In his private discussions Mr. Karamanlis underlines the need to focus on the country’s course, expressing his worry about a number of issues in relation to the SYRIZA-led coalition government’s actions, particularly in relation to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The former PM has not ruled out the possibility of dramatic political developments by spring.
