It is high time we finished with the independent “State” of football. For years governments and everyone have witnessed phenomena of violence and corruption in the pitches and they are content with vague assurances and promises that they will be dealt with implacably. Only we never move on from words to actions, because in fact they are afraid to oppose the armies that have been created time and again by all of those to protect their personal and team interests.

The despicable events of the past few days, both on the pitch and inside offices, by hooligans and big players, must not be forgotten this time. Another ostensible – perhaps – suspension of games for a week is not enough to cure the gangrene that is devouring football. This time the knife must reach the bone. We cannot sit back and be content with managing a sick situation, just because it suits some of the big players in football.

The measures that must be taken and the way the situation will be addressed have been discussed a lot, they have been implemented in other countries and worked. It is time they were fully and efficiently implemented here as well, without any delays or exemptions. After all, the State, that is us by the way, has paid many millions for structural work that remains unused, due to the reactions of the circuits operating and preying on football.

This government, which came to power promising transparency, trust and combating corruption, has a bright opportunity to implement its proclamations, without a cost. The state of lawlessness that dominates such a popular sport, pushing away real supporters and rewarding the fans of violence must end once and for all. The government must rest assured that if they achieve that, then the overwhelming majority of public opinion will be with them.
