The economy and currency only have meaning when they serve man. The saying of Protagoras constitutes a common European indicator of progress: ‘Man is the measure of all things’” announced the President Prokopis Pavlopoulos on Tuesday.

The President, who became an honorary citizen of Argos-Mycenae, underlined the importance of safeguarding the founding principles and values of the European Union.

Clarifications on ‘currency’

The statement that currency “only [has] meaning when it serves man” raised questions, given the government efforts to close the bailout program review. As such, the President later clarified that he is in favor of Greece’s membership in the euro zone and that he had supported the ‘Yes’ campaign during last summer’s referendum.

Furthermore, the President’s associates further explained that the meaning of the statement is that Europe must adopt a more relaxed monetary policy to benefit man.
