The General Confederation of Greek Workers (GSEE), the country’s largest trade union body and the Civil Servants’ Confederation (ADEDY) have announced a 24-hour, nationwide strike for Thursday, the 3rd of December.

In its statement GSEE denounces the “third and most onerous” bailout and the imminent pension system reform, which “will demolish the social security system”. GSEE underlines that the catastrophic government policy will lead to the further impoverization of the Greek people and destruction of the remaining economy.

Similarly ADEDY argues that the implementation of the bailout-mandated austerity reforms will result in the dramatic reduction of benefits and abolition of supplementary pensions, with while underlining that inequalities and class stratification will further intensify. ADEDY notes that the budget, which will raise taxes, will mostly affect vulnerable classes through cuts in education, healthcare, social insurance and local government.

The All Workers Militant Front (PAME) is also expected to make an announcement regarding its participation in the 24-hour general strike.
