The provisional President of New Democracy Evangelos Meimarakis has requested an appointment with the President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker in order to discuss the VAT in private education, migration and NSRF funding, among others.
Mr. Meimarakis announced the request for a meeting on Tuesday morning, in an interview on Mega Channel, where he revealed that EU legislation disallows the taxation of private education, adding that the Commission has verbally agreed to freeze the VAT hike on private education in Greece.
During the interview Mr. Meimarakis also announced that his party will not vote for legislation that taxes farmers and argued that SYRIZA wants to introduce the 23% VAT rate on private schools and tutoring. He also estimated that if Alexis Tsipras’ party comes first, then elections would follow soon after.
The main opposition leader underlined that Mr. Tsipras lied and “surprised us with the elections”. He made an appeal for voters to support him, in order to be able to form a government that will last the four-year term. A political rally has also been arranged outside New Democracy’s historic offices in down town Athens on Rigillis Street. Many prominent New Democracy officers are expected to attend the event.
