About 1,000 migrants, who were held in Kos and Mytilene after entering Greece, are expected to arrive in the port of Piraeus on Thursday, before making their way to Athens. Many of the migrants who are expected to arrive in Athens are minors and aside from food, require immediate medical attention.

The dramatic conflicts in the Middle East and northern Africa have forced millions to migrate to neighboring countries, with situation becoming increasingly worse. The Aegean islands, many of which depend on tourism, are facing serious problems.

In June 2015 alone an estimated 31,000 migrants arrived in Greece, when the arrivals in June 2014 were 2,783.
