In spite of the optimism generated by the joint statement issued by PM Alexis Tsipras and EC chief Jean-Claude Juncker, SYRIZA MP Kostas Lapavitsas was not confident that an agreement that is in line with the government’s program between Athens and its creditors can be achieved in May.

Mr. Lapavitsas told SKAI that the media’s pressure towards to government to sign an agreement is very dangerous and argued that the government must not abandon the bargaining chip of a rupture. The MP explained that “we are not here just to achieve something a little bit better”.

He stressed that the economy is not projected to grow as expected, which in turn suggests that there may be a problem achieving primary surplus goals. Mr. Lapavitsas commented that event a 1.5% or 1.2% surplus would be difficult to achieve. Furthermore, he argued that the government must not back down on pension system and that the economy needs to reboot.
