Coast Guard officers appear to be reluctant to request transfers to the islands in the Eastern Aegean, despite recent invitations by the Coast Guard command. Reportedly only 25 transfer requests have been submitted, while there are about 410 vacancies.

According to the Coast Guard, there are 77 vacant spots in Mytilene, 47 in Chios, 69 in Samos, 33 in Leros, 58 in Kos, 34 in Kalymnos, 10 in Symi and 85 in Rhodes.

With migration in 2015 having escalated dramatically, there is a need more than ever for adequate border security, however Coast Guard officers appear reluctant, with union representatives claiming that they do not trust central command on the duration of their transfers or that payments will be made.

As the weather conditions improve and migration from across the Aegean is expected to increase, the Coast Guard command is considering its options, including recalling the appointment of 25 officers, so that they may return to their positions on islands in the Eastern Aegean Sea.

A further 100 officers posted in other “overpopulated” services ay also be recruited to help, however union representatives are concerned as to whether the necessary funding will be provided to cover needs.
