The Ministry of Finances has introduced an online platform for monitoring VAT payments and has decided to abolish a “scandalous” –according to the country’s creditors – ministerial decision that exempted many businesses from even having a cash register.

This controversial decision, which was issued after the departure of Haris Theoharis from the General Secretariat of Public Revenue, exempted a variety of businesses from paying out VAT. The exemption applied to small businesses with an annual turnover of less than 10,000 euros.

The list of such businesses included beauty centers, gyms, hostels, playgrounds, clinics, doctors, dentists, parking lots, gambling agencies, tailors, millers, real estate agents, marriage agencies, employment agencies and others.

The exemption also applied to dozens of science-based professions, such as vets, psychologists, lawyers, architects, topographers, geologists, mechanics, as we as accountants.
