The Minister of Economy, Infrastructure, Shipping and Tourism Giorgos Stathakis estimated that an agreement with the country’s creditors will be reached within the next week, which will in turn restore funding to Greece and lead to the next, mid-term agreement.

Mr. Stathakis, who appeared on SKAI, also revealed that the government aims to abolish the controversial opening of stores on Sundays and explained that the previous system will return, where stores were allowed to open on two Sundays in the year. He also revealed that there are thoughts to allow regional governors and local trade associations to open on two additional Sundays during sale seasons.

Additionally, the Minister reported that talks will begin with the German joint venture that has been selected to improve the terms of privatization of regional airports. Specifically, they would look into the Greeks state’s participation and the extent of the concession, which at 50 years is deemed excessive. As for the port of Piraeus, Mr. Stathakis underlined that the Greek government is not considering a 100% privatization, bur rather a system with multiple shareholders.

Mr. Stathakis also revealed that the model that was previously chosen for the construction of highways has failed, as it is unrealistic to expect the construction to be funded by the banks. Mr. Stathakis avoided commenting on whether highway tolls would be reduced.

When asked about the problems faced by those who have taken out loans in Swiss franks, Mr. Stathakis responded that before he can provide a legislative solution, the courts must first issue a ruling. He also revealed that there are thoughts about the creation of a fund that will operate outside of the banking system, so that it may focus on social issues.

Finally, the Minister asserted that should the parliamentary Inquiry into the reasons that resulted in the bailout programs be carried out correctly, then light will be shed on a very important period.
