The possibility of an “honest compromise” in the negotiations carried out in Brussels, as recently explained by Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras from the stand in Parliament, is likely to prompt fierce and swift reactions within SYRIZA.

The Prime Minister aims to sing a new “growth agreement” with Greece’s partners in June, but it is not certain that the Left Wave or even the majority within SYRIZA will approve critical positions in such an agreement.

Specifically, while the government appears conciliatory regarding privatizations, the Left Wave has categorically rejected them. The possibility of maintaining the controversial ENFIA tax and reviewing VAT rates is also likely to prompt reactions within the government.

Furthermore, Panagiotis Lafazanis [pictured left] recently spoke of “clashing with German Europe”, illustrating the Left Wave’s insistence on not compromising with European demands.

As such, the upcoming nationwide conference called by the Left Wave for Saturday, the 4th of April, where the recent developments will be discussed, is expected to be interesting, as many members SYRIZA’s “internal opposition” consider an agreement with Europe a “given”.

A number of SYRIZA officers expect that Mr. Tsipras will pose a dilemma to his party prior to agreement in June, while another group believes that the Left Wave should take initiatives and a more active role, in an effort to uphold the party’s election campaign proclamations and conference decisions.
