The Alternate Minister of Administrative Reform Giorgos Katrougalos announced that up to 15,000 will be recruited in healthcare, education and state auditing mechanism and “wherever there are needs”.
Mr. Katrougalos also stressed that the government has “inherited” many deep injustices from its predecessors and underlined that until the economy recovers, wages in the public sector will not increase.
About 3,500 public sector employees are set to return to their posts immediately, in line with a series of judicial decisions. Mr. Katrougalos stated that “nobody will lose their job in the public sector” and that his government would introduce an “honest evaluation and mobility system that will not mean dismissal”.
Mr. Katrougalos further noted that he was a “sworn enemy of the removal of permanence” in the public sector and accused the previous government of introducing a “counter reform”. He also argued that the evaluation system was a used a cover-up for dismissals.
Regarding ERT, the former public broadcasting service that was controversially scrapped by the previous government, the Alt. Minister stressed the need for justice and expressed his support for a truly public broadcaster, rather than a clientelist, government television.
