The MP Panagiotis Melas announced his departure from the Independent Greeks (ANEL) shortly after 11am on Monday. Mr. Melas will maintain his seat in Parliament.
It appears that Mr. Melas decided to depart from the party due to his disagreement with party president Panos Kammenos regarding the Presidential elections. Mr. Kammenos has instructed his MPs to cast a negative vote in the upcoming elections in order to prompt early elections.
Mr. Melas was recently implicated in a bribery scandal, where he allegedly received a bribe in order to vote for a President in the upcoming elections. Mr. Melas has vehemently denied the allegations.
