The municipal council of Aristotle has objected to the expansion of the controversial mining operations taking place in Skouries and elsewhere and took the decision to cancel its agreements with the “Hellenic Gold” mining company.

The president of the municipal council Giorgos Zoumpas told the Athens-Macedonia News Agency that the mining will half the local water supply, forests, air quality and overall environment, while also having repercussion on financial activities.

According to Mr. Zoumpas, the council has decided to cancel all prior financial agreements it had made with the “Hellenic Gold” mining company. Opposition councilors were not present at the meeting, with their leader and former mayor Christos Pachtas, who has favored the mining operations, citing concerns for his personal security.
