The director of a pediatric surgery clinic at the G. Gennimatas University Hospital in Thessaloniki was arrested on Tuesday on bribery charges. The doctor is also a professor at the University of Thessaloniki.

According to the parents of a patient who was recently hospitalized, the pediatric surgery director demanded 1,000 euros in order to carry out a operation. The parents reported this to the police and the doctor was later arrested with marked bills.

The Ministry of Education condemned the incident and called upon the newly-elected University Rector Periklis Mitkas to follow the appropriate disciplinary procedures.
