With the temperature (finally) rising to 40 degrees and the 15th of August approaching, the summer exodus of Greeks from the urban centers is about to peak.

The 15th of August, when the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is celebrated, is on a Friday this year, resulting in a three-day weekend for most. As such, the Coast Guard and port authorities are on high alert in order to cope with the increased numbers of travelers.

Booking agents have reported that ticket reservations for many popular destinations, such as Crete, the Cycladic, Dodecanese and Argosaronic islands have nearly sold out. Port authorities have warned travelers who have not purchased or reserved tickets to confirm availability via telephone or internet before setting out for the ports.

Information on arrivals and departures via telephone are available on 14944 (OTE hotline) and 14541 (Port Authority of Piraeus).
