The Body of Public Administration Auditors and Inspectors (SEEDD) conducted an inspection of the amusement park where a 13-year-old boy tragically lost his life and his 9-year-old sister was seriously injured and found serious omissions regarding the park’s operation.
The SEEDD report, among others, notes that park space that was rented out to “Happy Fun Ltd”, the amusement park owning company, was non-legal, as the area was reserved for scientific and artistic purposes. Additionally, Happy Fun Ltd had not acquired a license to set up and operate the amusement park.
The report criticizes the municipality of Argyroupoli-Elliniko for failing to carry out necessary inspections regarding the legality of the operation, as well as failing to take any steps towards ensure that the amusement park maintained a semblance of health and safety measures and precautions.
The Body of Auditors and Inspectors conclude that the Ministry of Growth must establish a legal framework in order to regulate the operation and security of amusement parks, while stressing the need for the Ministries of Interior and Public Order to intervene promptly when such businesses are found to operate without necessary licenses.
The report has been forwarded to the courts handling the investigation of the tragic death of the 13-year-old boy. The Minister of Administrative Reform Kyriakos Mitsotakis commented that “the report results are disheartening, the amusement park should never have operated and we must all be troubled by this”.
