Teacher federation OLME has expressed its objection to the Ministry of Education’s plans to extend teaching into the holidays to compensate for time lost due to student occupations. In response, the federation has announced walk outs between 8am and 11am for the 23rd, 24h and 25th of April at schools where teaching is expected to carry on during the Easter holidays.
OLME’s press statement points out that the recent changes to legislation mean that local teacher unions have now lost the ability to regulate their teaching schedules accordingly. Furthermore, the federation expressed its reservations over the Ministerial decision, as it appears to adopt an accounting perspective, rather educational, in making up for lost time.
As such, OLME’s board of directors has requested from the State Council to abolish the relevant legislation and has called teachers to attend a protest outside the Ministry of Education on Friday, the 11th of April, at 2pm to protest.
