The government is concerned about the announcement by Special Forces Reserve Officer Community (KEED) which demands that the current government resigns in order for a new one to be formed under the leadership of the Supreme Court.

Senior government officers claim that announcements such as those by KEED will only exacerbate things and add that the “overwhelming majority” of those in the Police and Armed Forces are “dedicated to our Democracy”. Government spokesperson Kedikoglou explained that the “minority exceptions will face the consequences”.

In light of testimonies suggesting that a number of active officers in the Police and Armed Forces have an active role in Golden Dawn’s alleged training camps and illegal activities, the timing of KEED’s announcement has caused some concern over the course of action to be taken.

The government does not want to disrupt the operation of the Police and Armed Forces without just cause, so it will carefully consider its next moves. The Minister of National Defense Avramopoulos called the Chief of the Armed Forces Michalis Kostarakos to investigate the allegations of active Armed Forces officers training Golden Dawn members.

In recent years there have been a number of times when time reserve officers called for a coup, most of which focused on the state of the economy. The Portuguese Armed Forces made a similar announcement last year, warning that they would “take the situation in their own hands” to tackle the Portuguese government’s austerity policies.
