SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras will give a speech tonight at the London School of Economics on the ways in which Greece can overcome the financial crisis. Mr. Tsipras will discuss his alternative proposal for reconstructing Greece, before a “demanding audience”.

According to Mr. Tsipras’ staff, the Greek politician has made it his mission to define the role and political goals of the contemporary left, regardless of his audience; Mr. Tsipras feels that the left is not ‘contemporary’ or ‘European’ when it accepts the imposition of a neoliberal economic strategy” leading to authoritarianism, restriction of social freedoms and political rights and imposition of anti-democratic models of governing.

Mr. Tsipras is expected to stress that the crisis is not simply financial, but political, civic and cultural. The only way out of the crisis, according to Mr. Tsipras is setting up a socially just politics, which will preserve social cohesion, enhance the real economy and protect the rule of law and democracy.

During his three-day stay in London, Mr. Tsipras will also give interviews to British media and attend events and meetings with the British left and unions.
