New Democracy’s parliamentary representative, Kostas Tzavaras, has declared that the government’s actions in managing the deadly wildfire in Mati were criminal.
“What the government did was a crime, which will be an eternal stigma for the left-wing government of this country. It is mainly a crime about which the judiciary should responsibly offer the catharsis befitting such a major and tragic event, in which more than 94 people lost their lives. I hear there have been efforts to hide the number of people who lost their lives. We shall examine that,” Tzavaras said.
“In the fire in Evia [yesterday] we saw a greater readiness in handing the disaster. The prefect was on site from the first moment, as were Fire Service forces. We saw a village that was evacuated in an organised and preventive manner. Here we see how wrong the government is in the aftermath of Mati, in its efforts to find excuses and words that do not reflect reality,” he said.
Tzavaras said the Mati disaster revealed the nakedness of the government and the incompetence of government cadres to implement planned and decided measures which the competent ministers had prepared in 2018.
He said this indicates that the state has collapsed under this government, which cannot govern the country, and that there is a void in governmental authority.

The New Democracy deputy said that the current government has no moral authority to govern the country that it led into this national tragedy. The elections will offer a redeeming way out for the government itself, as no one any longer believes that such a government is worthy of governing a country, beset by so many difficulties , in such difficult conditions.
